Rank tracking is the repeated, scheduled recording of where a URL or listing appears in search results for defined keywords, archived so movement can be detected and attributed. In local search it samples positions per geographic point via a geo-grid.

A rank tracker automates and archives what a manual search performs once: issue the query, note the position, repeat on schedule. Methodologically, the term denotes a sampling process over time — and in local search, over space as well, because positions vary with the searcher's coordinates.
